Queen Mary University of London has announced the official opening of Queen Mary Enterprise (QME), a new innovation space in the heart of Whitechapel in east London.
Designed by international architects NBBJ, the same team behind the Queen Mary BioEnterprises Innovation Centre (QMB), and located within QMB, the new space is divided into hot desk, co-working and individual offices to support early-stage start-up companies, as well to drive economic growth and enhance health outcomes in Tower Hamlets - England’s third most deprived local authority.
The site has been designed to help early-stage Digital Health, Med-Tech and AI companies to grow as part of an ambitious research and innovation agenda and in line with Queen Mary University of London’s 2030 Strategy, which aims to foster innovation and creativity.
Located just 30 minutes from City Airport, the new infrastructure offers 24/7 access and includes 70 desks, comprising nine offices of varying sizes and 15 hot-desks, and includes unlimited fast-fibre optic internet and Wi-Fi, meeting and event space, access to science equipment at Queen Mary, as well as plenty of breakout space.
Professor Colin Bailey, the President and Principal of Queen Mary University of London, said: “We are delighted to welcome Queen Mary Enterprises to our stable of world leading life science operations. The new space again highlights our focus to foster innovation, creativity and collaboration at scale from our world leading research and innovation.”
Sharon Ellis, Director of Research, Enterprise and Partnerships and Queen Mary Innovations at Queen Mary University of London, added: “Queen Mary excels at collaborative between the university and business as evidenced by our top ranking in the Knowledge Exchange Framework. QME will enhance our infrastructure further to help small businesses and start-ups to succeed by giving them space to collaborate and grow, as well as specialist facilities and expertise.”
Queen Mary was awarded £1.5 million to expand its life science incubation space in 2020 as part of a £20 million investment into 20 University Enterprise Zones (UEZs) by Research England, part of UK Research and Innovation.
