Professor Fiona Walter has been appointed as the new Joint Director of the Wolfson Institute and Institute for Population Health Sciences, Queen Mary University of London.
She will join Queen Mary in April from the University of Cambridge, where she is currently Reader in Primary Care Cancer Research, co-leading the international CanTest Collaborative and leading the Cambridge Hub of the NIHR Policy Research Unit for Cancer Screening Awareness and Early Diagnosis.
Professor Walter also holds leadership roles at CRUK’s Early Detection and Diagnosis Committee and CRUK Cambridge Centre’s Early Detection programme committee. Her research focuses on primary care and the cancer pathway, including awareness, screening, detection and diagnosis, living with and beyond cancer, and global health.
On her appointment, Professor Walter said: “One of the most exciting things about coming to Queen Mary is that there is so much locally and globally impactful work on population health and preventive medicine already being done here.
“I look forward to contributing to this intellectually stimulating and diverse environment, which offers a unique opportunity to complement and enhance my research and impact activities in primary care cancer research, as well as focus on the broader advancement of preventive medicine, primary care and public health.”
Professor Steve Thornton, Vice Principal (Health) at Queen Mary, added: “Fiona is bringing fantastic expertise to this new role, where she will develop and lead the strategy for the Institutes, ensuring that our research in population health and preventive medicine has local, national and global impact.”
