Final year medical student from the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry, Charlie Sellar, has been awarded a prestigious scholarship from the Healthcare Leadership Academy (HLA) in recognition of his great potential for becoming a leader in healthcare.
Charlie is no stranger to leadership, having served as President of the Barts and the London Student Association (BLSA) during the last academic year. He will join a community of scholars from over 10 countries, who have been selected from a competitive pool of applicants from across the world. Scholars will attend several leadership workshops throughout the year, and receive mentorship, coaching, and networking opportunities with HLA Alumni and prominent healthcare leaders.
The Healthcare Leadership Academy (HLA) supports healthcare professionals and students in developing leadership skills essential for shaping the future of healthcare. Founded in 2016, the organisation recognises individuals with proven leadership potential and offers an opportunity to nurture their leadership skills to the next level.
During the year’s programme, Charlie plans to focus on building on his previous work with United Hospitals, the main representative body for students and Medical Student Associations in London, which he chaired last year. He said: “I’m delighted to be involved – as someone who sees a career in Medical Leadership this scholarship is a brilliant stepping-stone to that community, and a great opportunity for me to polish my understanding of healthcare leadership and management that I first gained here through the BLSA.”
Johann Malawana, Director of The HLA, said: “After a rigorous and competitive application process, we are delighted to welcome our new cohort of 2024-2025 scholars. At a time of great global challenge in healthcare, it is important that the next generation of healthcare leaders are motivated, inspired, and prepared in order to best look after the populations they serve.”
