STARS, a production written by acclaimed theatremaker, artist, and Professor of Theatre Writing and Performance Practice at Queen Mary, Mojisola Adebayo, has secured the New Play OffWestEnd Theatre (Offie) Award 2024.
A Tamasha and ICA co-production, STARS is an Afrofuturist odyssey that explores themes of desire, touch, and the rediscovery of pleasure. The narrative unfolds through the perspective of one woman, accompanied by a live DJ and augmented by creative captions with animations by Candice Purwin
Professor Adebayo said:
“Old ladies, orgasms and outer space – what’s not to like?!’ – that’s how I pitched the play. And despite the laughs we had more rejections for this script than any other I have written. So, thank you to Tamasha and the ICA for being brave enough to stage STARS and to all the artists who had the creativity and courage to illuminate the issues behind the tag-line. STARS is dedicated to women and children, like me, who are survivors of gender-based violence and abuse. The success of STARS would not have been possible without the fantastic support of the Drama department at QMUL. Thanks to the whole team!”
