Queen Mary marks the start of Apprenticeship week with the announcement of new apprenticeship programmes.
Queen Mary was one of the first Russell Group institutions to deliver Degree Apprenticeship programmes back in 2015, and remains at the forefront of this type of delivery.
Currently the University has three Undergraduate level apprenticeships and three Postgraduate level apprenticeships. These are with prestigious employers including PwC, Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley, Deutsche Bank, KPMG, Barts and the London School of Medicine and Dentistry and Government departments.
The undergraduate level 4 and Level 6 apprenticeships include Investment Operations specialist, Digital and Technology Solutions with two pathways as a Software Engineer and Data Analyst. And our postgraduate, level 7 qualifications include Senior Professional Economist, Digital Technology Solutions Specialist (Data Analyst) and Academic Professional (Clinical Education).
The intended postgraduate apprenticeships due to start in 2025 are MSc Systems Engineer Degree Apprentice, MSc Engineering Management Degree Apprentice, MSc Physicians Associate Degree Apprentice, and MSc Advanced Robotics Engineering.
“We are highly committed to growing our apprentice provision by working collaboratively with our sector experts in the industries and to address the future skills needs and talent acquisition within their workforce,” said Eileen O’Gara head of apprenticeships.
One of the largest areas of growth is the L7 Senior Professional Economist apprenticeship, and more recently the growth in the London City Institute of Technology digital technology solutions apprenticeships.
Sonal Jain started her career at Goldman Sachs on the BSc Digital and Technology Solutions (Software Engineering) apprenticeship in 2020 and is due to complete this summer. She said: “The Goldman Sachs Degree Apprenticeship is a fantastic programme and I could not recommend it enough! It is perfect for someone looking to get a head-start on building a career in technology at a top-tier firm and making a direct impact from day one.”
She said the apprenticeship allowed her to “collaborate with experienced teams of talented individuals, provided the opportunity to learn on the job at an accelerated pace, and aligned with my career aspirations.”
Like all large organisations Queen Mary also funds an apprenticeship levy; in May we transferred £30,000 of this to Bright Young Futures, a Redbridge charity supporting young care leavers, providing short to long term housing and working towards their independent living. This will fund 6 apprenticeships for people working with those young people.
Queen Mary also has an active staff apprenticeship scheme, with 40 apprentices currently in training, focused on data, coaching, leadership and management, and 20 who have successfully completed the programme.
Apprenticeships week, which runs from 5-11 February, is designed to raise awareness of this option. The theme this year is Skills for Life.
