Queen Mary is dedicated to opening the doors of opportunity and unleashing the potential of every student - not just our students in the UK but around the world. Our long-established transnational partnerships with leading universities in China equip students with a combination of the best aspects of two different education systems.
This week we celebrated the hard work of more than 440 students graduating from our joint programmes with Nanchang University (NCU) and Northwestern Polytechnical University (NPU).
The President and Principal of Queen Mary University of London, Professor Colin Bailey, who celebrated with our graduates at both ceremonies, said: “I would like to congratulate our 2024 graduates at NCU and NPU as they have faced the most adverse conditions with fewer in-person lectures in studying through the pandemic. Theirs is a great achievement. With their knowledge of cultural nuances and sensitivities, language skills and unique skillset, acquired using the latest technologies, our graduates are fully prepared to take on the next challenge in their studies or professional careers.”
Over 230 students graduate from Nanchang
On Wednesday 19 June, over 230 students graduated with a Joint Degree in Biomedical Sciences / Clinical Biomedicine from Queen Mary University of London’s Joint Programme (JP) with Nanchang University (NCU).
The Joint Programme between the School of Biological and Behavioural Sciences at Queen Mary University of London and NCU - located in the Province of Jiangxi in the Southeast of China - was established in 2013. It combines the academic expertise and educational cultures of two international institutions in equal parts – and students graduate with degrees from both universities.
During the ceremony, Principal and President of Queen Mary University of London Colin Bailey praised the 11-year partnership, highlighting the uniqueness of the programme, which is recognised by the Chinese Ministry of Education and respected across the world.
Among this year’s successful graduates is Dingfa Liang, who leaves Queen Mary with a great level of confidence and gratitude:
"Queen Mary is a research-intensive institution, a member of the Russell Group, located in London's East End and has a world-renowned Faculty of Medicine. I feel very fortunate to be able to spend three years here, interacting with excellent professors, absorbing cutting-edge medical knowledge, and realising the importance of independent and lifelong learning."
Prof Mark Maconochie, Co-Director of the Nanchang Joint Programme and Professor of Biomedical Sciences, said:
“The cohort of 2019 graduated this Wednesday culminating from five years of hard work, much of it having to learn with Queen Mary staff teaching and support through remote teaching during the pandemic. Despite this, their efforts and achievements over the last five years have made all Queen Mary and Nanchang University staff involved in their learning, from teachers, technical, clinical and professional services staff so very proud! Students, and now of course graduates, and their parents have come from all over China to receive their awards on what is a magnificent and joyful occasion. From the JP team and I: congratulations and good luck - we know our students will continue to succeed!”
More than 200 students graduate from QMES in Xi’an
At Northwestern Polytechnical University (NPU) in Xi’an, the capital of Shaanxi Province, more than 200 students were awarded a dual degree in in the field of Engineering Materials from Queen Mary University of London Engineering School, Northwestern Polytechnical University (QMES) on Friday 21 June.
QMES was the first Sino-Foreign Joint Educational Institution (JEI) to be established in the Northwest region of China. Students can currently choose from two degrees in the Materials Sciences, whose structure is based on Queen Mary’s BEng Materials Science and Engineering.
During his speech, Principal and President of Queen Mary University, Professor Colin Bailey, praised the combination of skills acquired at QMES as being “in very short supply in the world today and essential to the future economy and society, in China and across the rest of the world.”
Taught jointly by NPU staff and Queen Mary staff from the London campus in English, the degrees prepare students for careers in the expanding material science and manufacturing industry as well as for higher degrees and research within universities in China and internationally.
Dr Maria Romero-Gonzalez, Executive Vice-Dean and Director of the School said: “I am delighted to see the 4th cohort of students graduating from the QMES. This cohort joined the school during the pandemic and through hard work and dedication have managed to reach their graduation. They have made everyone at QMES so proud - congratulations and well done to all our students!”
For BEng Materials Science and Engineering graduate Ye Yuanming, who won the QMUL President and Principal’s Award to Excellent Students, the dual degree has laid the perfect foundation for further studies: she will be progressing to PhD Postgraduate Study at Tsinghua University. "QMES not only cultivated my professional skills and ways of thinking, but also opened the door for my dream of pursuing scientific research. Here I have gained the ability of teamwork and self-learning. I am very grateful to every amiable and respectable teacher and friend I have met."
