A public lecture at Queen Mary University of London will explore how higher education is now alleged to be a market in which student choice ‘drives up quality’.
The free event on Wednesday 15 January is the eighth annual Drapers' Lecture - a series which gives new and challenging perspectives on teaching and learning from a variety of viewpoints, institutions and organisations.
Speaker Professor Graham Gibbs will explain that if performance indicators available to prospective students are valid, and institutions make serious efforts to improve their performance indicators, then student choices might indeed improve quality.
He will ask how much league tables and public data really tell us about educational quality and questions whether institutional efforts will improve quality, or only performance indicators.
The lecture will summarise what is known about the factors that make a difference to how much students learn. Professor Gibbs will also argue for changes to what ‘quality’ information is made available to students, and to how it is used by institutions to produce worthwhile improvements.
Professor Graham Gibbs is Honorary Professor at Winchester and former Director of the Oxford Learning Institute, University of Oxford.
'What Determines Educational Quality?' is followed by a reception with staff, students and special guests from east London, the higher education sector and Queen Mary partners in industry, business and the arts.
