Tower Hamlets student bursary scheme launches for 2014/15

The Mayor’s Higher Education Award is a ground-breaking scheme run by Tower Hamlets Council, which aims to ease the cost of university for students in the borough.

There are 400 grants available, each of £1,500, which will go to young people who are starting higher education in the 2014/15 academic year.

Speaking at an event at St Paul’s Way Trust School on Monday 15 September, QMUL’s Professor Joy Hinson explained that QMUL is delighted to support the scheme.

She emphasised QMUL’s commitment to ensuring that the university provides opportunities for the best and most talented students, regardless of their background or family income.

“At Queen Mary we are proud that so many talented and highly-motivated students from Tower Hamlet choose to study with us,” Professor Hinson explained.

“We too offer support to help ensure that that they are not held back by financial barriers. Nearly 80 per cent of undergraduate students from Tower Hamlets receive a bursary from Queen Mary to help them with their studies.

“Helping these bright young people achieve their potential is good for the students, the local community and for the country.”

Eligible students must be younger than 24 years old before the start of the academic year in which their course starts and up to 25 years old for those who had a Special Educational Needs statement up to the age of 16, or who receive Disability Living Allowance.

They must have lived in Tower Hamlets for at least three years at the time of application, although young people who have lived in the borough for less than three years but hold full refugee status are also eligible, as are young people up to the age of 21 who are in care in the borough.
