As you settle in during your first few days and weeks, here’s what you need to know about your induction to the University.
When you begin work at Queen Mary, your line manager will meet with you to discuss your local induction. This will include elements like:
Using the Induction Checklist will help you and your line manager to make sure you haven’t missed anything: New Starter Induction Checklist [DOC 67KB]
The next Staff Welcome Event is run 3-4 times a year by the Organisational & Professional Development Team.
You’ll meet new colleagues from across the University, hear about current areas of interest and development, and meet the Principal. You’ll have the chance to raise questions about your time at Queen Mary, or about the opportunities and challenges the University and sector currently face.
Whether you’re involved in academic research, teaching, or supporting students and staff, the event is a great opportunity to find out more about the University's working culture and values, its role nationally in higher education, and its impact in the local community and across the world.
After you’ve started work here, you can book a place on our CPD Training platform. Your manager will also be able to book a place on your behalf.
If you have any queries about the Welcome Events, please contact welcome@qmul.ac.uk.
During your local induction, your line manager will let you know about any training you need to do for your role; for example, if you’re going to be carrying out manual handling, or working with hazardous substances.
There is also some training that all staff need to do. This ensures that we comply with regulation and legislation, and that we maintain high professional and ethical standards across the University.
The Mandatory Training page on the Organisational & Professional Development website outlines what you’ll need to do. We recommend that you spread this training out over a couple of weeks so that you’ll have time to reflect and discuss as needed.
At Queen Mary, we are committed to maintaining a safe environment to work and study in. Your safety and health is important to us, and therefore we want to ensure you are aware of how we can work together to minimise risks as far as reasonably practicable.
Please ensure you complete your health and safety induction, with your line manager’s support, within the first few weeks of starting your new role.
Wellbeing is the experience of good mental, emotional and physical health: what you yourself experience as comfortable and positive. Queen Mary has many resources in place to support your wellbeing, including a number of activities and programmes, and sources of support such as coaching and Mental Health First Aid.
Queen Mary colleagues also have access to Workplace Options, our employee assistance programme. This a free, confidential service that provides a wide range of support for staff around help balancing work, family and personal life. They're available anytime, any day, by phone, email or online.
As with any large organisation, Queen Mary speaks its own language. With such a wide variety of departments, functions, and platforms that the University needs to keep operating at its high standard, it’s useful to be able to navigate. The links below should help.
