Trouble connecting to the WiFi? Email not working? IT are here to help!

IT Services

As a new student, you'll be able to login to some of your IT accounts before you get to Queen Mary.

As a new student, you'll be able to login to Students records and Accommodations with your Applicant account you get to Queen Mary. At the point of enrolment, you will receive the IT Welcome email with your username and instructions to set up your Student account. You will then no longer need your Applicant account.

Before you arrive, you can set up your account by following these steps:

  1. Set your password and register for Self-Service Password Reset (SSPR)
  2. Set up Multi-Factor Authenticaction (MFA) - we recommend using the Microsoft Authenticator app
  3. Download the Queen Mary app (QMUL App on Android and Apple app stores)
  4. Set up and access your Queen Mary email account - important communications from the university will be sent to this, so remember to check it regularly
  5. Access MySIS with your username@qmul.ac.uk to access your enrolment information, registered modules, financial information, personal details, and provisional results, amongst other things
  6. Login to QMPlus to access your learning materials, timetable, module information, assignments, and more
  7. Set up your devices to access eduroam WiFi - you can do this before you arrive on campus so you will be ready to connect once you have arrived.

Top tip - Equipment

Whether you’re learning on campus or remotely, we recommend you buy your own IT equipment. Many companies offer discounts for enrolled students, so make sure you have a look at these when you arrive and take advantage of student prices. You can find discounts through Totum, Student Beans and UNiDAYS.

The recommended minimum specification for IT equipment to be procured and used by QM students is as follows.

A laptop with:

  • 8GB RAM
  • Windows 10
  • 256 GB SSD.

Connectivity should be via either:

  • A broadband link with at least 10Mbps download speed and at least 1Mbps upload speed
  • A 4G unlimited data plan PAYG SIM.

Note:

  • It is recommended that if a broadband link is being used, the laptop is cabled directly into the router rather than relying on Wi-Fi (to improve reliability and performance)
  • If you already own a device with a different specification (e.g. a hard drive that is not an SSD), that may be adequate. The above minimum specification is to guide you if you decide that you need to buy a new device.

Mobile App

Queen Mary’s mobile app is available as a native app for Android (version 2.3.3 or higher) and iOS (version 6.0 and above) devices. The app allows you to do a number of things on the move, including: check your course timetables, log into QMplus and your Queen Mary email, search for and renew library books directly from your phone.

Wi-Fi

Download CAT installers to connect to Universities' Wi-Fi securely - you can download and set-up CAT before arriving on campus! 'Eduroam' is Queen Mary's Wi-Fi service.

BONUS! If you are in an area where Eduroam Wi-Fi is available (most UK-based Universities and some European-based Universities), you will be able to connect to their Wi-Fi free of charge.
