The unification of 3 major heart hospitals and 2 universities to provide cardiovascular clinical-care, research, and training. These include Newham University Hospital, The Royal London Hospital, Whipps Cross University Hospital, QMUL and UCL. This is one of the largest cardiovascular hospitals in Europe providing ~85,000 patient episodes of care per annum. The centre has 10 theatres, 10 catheterisation labs and more than 300 general, cardiac and critical care beds making it the largest of its kind in Europe.

The Cancer Research UK (CRUK) Barts Centre, a partnership between Queen Mary University of London's Barts Cancer Institute and Centre for Prevention, Detection and Diagnosis at the Wolfson Institute of Population Health, Barts Health NHS Trust and CRUK, is part of a national network of 15 centres. Our vision is to focus on the application and translation of our research to the clinic, whilst continuing to conduct cutting edge, fundamental research to understand the mechanisms that drive tumourigenesis as well as the epidemiology, screening, and prevention of cancer.

The purpose of the Barts BioResource is to establish and grow a dynamic health data repository and linked biobank of consented patients managed by Barts Health NHS Trust to allow research into health and disease. The Barts BioResource relies on the donation of human blood, saliva, swabs, urine, faeces, and soft/solid tissue. Over 28,000 patients have consented to participate in the Barts BioResource project since its inception.

The Barts Cardiovascular Clinical Trials Unit (CVCTU) was established via a Barts Charity programme award in 2015 and supports trials delivering therapeutic innovation for patients with heart disease. We are a branch of the Barts CTU (ID:4) - a UK Clinical Research Collaboration (UKCRC) registered unit. The CVCTU supports clinical studies focused on the broad area of cardiovascular research. Our current portfolio provides services and support to clinical trials conducted within the Barts Heart Centre, Barts Health NHS Trust, and Queen Mary University of London.

The largest cardiac-imaging site in the UK. Approximately 8000 cardiac MRI scans, 4000 CTs, 50,000 echoes and 3000 nuclear cardiac scans are performed on-site per annum. This clinical-academic Centre is closely linked to the Department of Imaging at Barts Health NHS Trust’s Barts Heart Centre, and also collaborates closely with clinical academics from Queen Mary University of London and University College London. Together with Barts Heart Centre we offer highly rated cardiac imaging courses.

This has been created to harness excellence and expertise from Queen Mary University of London’s Division of Bioengineering & School of Electronic Engineering and Computer Science, UCL’s Bioengineering Department & Weiss Institute and Cambridge University’s Department of Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics. This collaborative will apply strong expertise on wearable and implantable sensors, material discovery by AI, robotics and additive manufacturing, and study bespoke sensor technologies which wirelessly link both physical and simulation data to the digital twin.

This unique hub facilitates the engagement of cardiovascular businesses globally through bespoke innovation support and brokers collaborations with London’s academic and scientific knowledge base. The CVDHub supports business competitiveness and develops/delivers new cardiovascular products and technologies. The William Harvey Heart Centre was opened in 2011 by Sir William Castell LVO and is dedicated to tackling the growing burden of heart disease and stroke worldwide. A major attribute of the Heart Centre is the integration of laboratory work with patient engagement alongside a state-of-the-art Clinical Research Centre, which can run clinical studies in multiple therapeutic areas specialising in, but not limited to, cardiovascular, respiratory, endocrinology and rheumatology diseases.
