Transcript of an interview with Albert Reynolds, Irish Taoiseach, by John Humphrys for BBC On the Record on 20 February 1994. On 15 December 1993 the British and Irish governments jointly issued the Downing Street Declaration which affirmed the right of the people of Northern Ireland to self-determination and stated that future relations between North and South on the island of Ireland were to be determined by the consent of people on both parts of the island. As of February 1994 the republican movement had not publicly supported the Declaration. In this interview Reynolds discusses the political impasse over the Downing Street Declaration and the current relationship between both governments. On the Record was BBC's flagship political programme.
