Transcript of an interview with David Trimble, designate First Minister of Northern Ireland, by John Humphrys for BBC On the Record on 21 May 2000. David Trimble must win the support of the ruling council of the UUP in order to gain authority to accept the IRA statement on decommissioning and to re- engage with the devolved institutions. Humphrys suggests that it is unlikely that Trimble will be supported and that his position as party leader is under threat. Trimble outlines his reasons as to why he believes the UUP should see the IRA statement as a positive development. The issue of the Patten report on policing is also discussed. On the Record was BBC's flagship political programme.
