Transcript of an interview with James Chichester-Clark, Prime Minister of Northern Ireland, for BBC Panorama and published in the Irish Times on 7 July 1970. In May 1969 James Chichester-Clark succeeded Terence O’Neill as Prime Minister of Northern Ireland. Later that summer conflict had erupted in Northern Ireland over the civil rights issue while during 1969 and 1970 paramilitary organisations such as the UVF and Provisional IRA began militant campaigns. Ahead of the marching season Chichester-Clark discusses his attempts to maintain law and order in Northern Ireland and his policies on North-South relations. The Irish Times is the leading daily newspaper in Ireland.
