Transcript of an interview with John Major, Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, and Albert Reynolds, Irish Taoiseach, on 26 May 1994. On 15 December 1993 the British and Irish governments jointly issued the Downing Street Declaration which affirmed the right of the people of Northern Ireland to self-determination and stated that future relations between North and South on the island of Ireland were to be determined by the consent of people on both parts of the island. Although the Provisional IRA announced a three day ceasefire on 6 April republican and loyalist violence continued in April and May. In this interview Major and Reynolds discuss the continued violence in Northern Ireland. The Provisional IRA and Combined Loyalist Military Command later announced full cessations of military activity on 31 August 1994 and 13 October 1994 respectively.
