Interview with John Major on 8 December 1995

Published:

Transcript of an interview with John Major, Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, on 8 December 1995. On 28 November the British and Irish governments issued a Joint Communiqué. This outlined a twin-track process to advance progress on the issues of decommissioning and all-party negotiations. The proposals included the establishment of an independent body to advise the British and Irish governments on paramilitary decommissioning and the beginning of all party negotiations by the end of February 1996. On 7 December, however, the IRA issued a statement repudiating the proposal to decommission arms and ascribing the British government blame for any delay in all-party negotiations. In this interview Major responds to the IRA statement.
