Audio interview with Martin McGuinness, deputy First Minister of Northern Ireland, by Elaine McGee for BBC Radio Foyle on 9 August 2013. Two days later a controversial Sinn Fein march passed off peacefully in Castlederg, Co. Tyrone. It had been organised in commemoration of two members of the IRA who were killed in Castlederg in 1973 when the bombs they were transporting exploded. A unionist counter-demonstration during the march also passed off peacefully. In the weeks leading up to the event the DUP had called on the Parades Commission to ban the march while Theresa Villiers called on Sinn Fein to voluntarily cancel the parade. In this interview Martin McGuinness discusses Villiers’ suggestion and, more widely, the political difficulties surrounding the parade. Breakfast is BBC Radio Foyle’s early morning programme.
