Transcript of an interview with Mitchel McLaughlin, chairperson of Sinn Fein, by John Humphrys for BBC On the Record on 6 February 2000. Two years on from the Belfast/Good Friday Agreement the political situation in Northern Ireland is precarious. The institutions have been suspended due to the UUP pulling out of the Executive in response to a lack of movement on IRA decommissioning. In this interview Mitchell McLaughlin discusses the situation. He believes that David Trimble’s position as leader of the UUP is detrimental to the peace process. On the Record was BBC's flagship political programme.
