On 12 August Martin McGuinness of Sinn Fein debated Ken Maginnis of the Ulster Unionist Party on BBC Newsnight, the first time a UUP representative had agreed to appear beside a member of Sinn Fein on British television. By 17 September Sinn Fein and the UUP had joined the multi-party talks at Stormont which later led to the Belfast Agreement/Good Friday Agreement in April 1998. In this interview Mowlam discusses the potential for negotiation between republicans and unionists.
