Transcript of an interview with William Craig, former Northern Ireland Minister of Home Affairs, by Gerard McCreesh for the Sunday Independent in August 1970. In December 1968, Terence O’Neill, then Prime Minister of Northern Ireland, dismissed Craig, who differed in opinion on the issue of British intervention in Northern Ireland affairs. Five months later O’Neill himself resigned as Prime Minister to be replaced by James Chichester-Clark. As Clark came under pressure within unionism in relation to his inability to prevent the growing violence in Northern Ireland, Craig was publicly suggested as an alternative leader. In this interview he discusses his potential policies. The Sunday Independent is Ireland’s principal Sunday newspaper.
