Video interviews with Mike Jackson (Commander in Chief of Land Command in the British Army), Gary McMichael (leader of the UDP) and Nigel Dodds (DUP MLA for Belfast North) for ITN on 5 July 2000. Earlier the Parades Commission had ruled that an Orange Order parade could not return from Drumcree to Portadown via the mainly nationalist Garvaghy Road. Between 2 and 4 July rioting broke out between loyalist protesters and the security forces over the issue while several cars were hijacked and torched in Belfast. Meanwhile, on 5 July DUP ministers Peter Robinson and Nigel Dodds announced their intention to resign from the Executive given Sinn Fein’s continuation in government. Jackson and McMichael discuss the outbreaks of violence while Dodds explains the DUP’s decision.
