Transcript of a press conference with John Major, Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, and Albert Reynolds, Irish Taoiseach, on 19 February 1994. On 15 December 1993 the British and Irish governments jointly issued the Downing Street Declaration which affirmed the right of the people of Northern Ireland to self-determination and stated that future relations between North and South on the island of Ireland were to be determined by the consent of people on both parts of the island. In the interim period John Major refused Gerry Adams’ request to further clarify the Agreement. In this press conference Major and Reynolds discuss the significance of the Downing Street Declaration to the stability of the Peace Process. On 31 August 1994 the Provisional IRA announced a cessation of military activity.
