The Northern Ireland Political Collection seeks to collect all printed material relating to the ‘Troubles’. Since 1969, it has amassed over a quarter of a million items. It is a unique resource – no other institution in a localised conflict has systematically collected material from all sides. The collection documents the activities and views of all parties to the conflict, from paramilitaries to government. It covers publications by organisations on the margins, as well as those involved in policy and mainstream political processes. The literature ranges from ephemera – stickers, leaflets, posters, and Christmas cards – to substantial collections of books, pamphlets, manifestos, (over 14,000, all computer catalogued), photographs and audio-visual items. This material is complemented by a complete press cutting service spanning the entire period of the ‘Troubles', the Collection also holds the press cutting service of the Northern Ireland Office at Stormont, 1969-1989. Of particular interest is an extensive collection of documents on the peace process. The Political Collection is also the repository for several important archives, including that of the Northern Ireland Civil Rights Association and the Northern Ireland Women’s Rights Association.
