Dr Jones has appeared on BBC World News talking about Myanmar (Burma) after UN Secretary Ban Ki-Moon became the first foreigner to address the country’s parliament. Dr Jones commented that the West and international institutions have been caught ‘on the hop’ by the speed and extent of reforms in Burma over the last year and a half. Twenty years of policies isolating the country and placing sanctions on it have now been rendered irrelevant. There is also pressure in the US to lift its sanctions, with Dr Jones predicting changes will come soon. He also described potential set backs to reform.
