Labour believed the vote would show Mrs May had lost the confidence of the Commons and could potentially topple her as leader. They said it was clearly a motion and therefore the Government should allow it time for debate. But Professor Tim Bale, suggested it was a tactical move: “Corbyn presumably chose to table a no-confidence motion that cited the Prime Minister rather than tabling one citing the Government because, were he to do the latter rather than the former, he would effectively remove the last remaining obstacle to Labour campaigning for another EU referendum – something he seems to want to avoid at all costs since he is a) a Eurosceptic and b) afraid of Labour losing Leave voters.”
