Professor Rainbow Murray, commented on the barriers facing women getting into politics in The Guardian. She said: “The problem that keeps coming up in my interviews seems to relate to motherhood. Numerous interviewees have had to deal with suspicion — if they’re younger, the suspicion that they will have children on the campaign trail and/or in office; if they’re older, the suspicion that their children will prove to be a distraction. Or, if they don’t have children, the suspicion that this in turn will play badly with voters.”
