The philanthro-capitalism embodied by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation faces increasing criticism. Professor Sophie Harman expressed her qualms about their lack of accountability on BBC World Service programme Business Daily. Dr Harman said: “My concern with the Gates Foundation is that there is no external critique of it, there’s what we call a ‘Bill Chill’. No one’s willing to come out and question the Gates Foundation understandably because they are worried of losing finance or their much needed research portfolios. You have this hugely powerful institution with very few people willing to come out and say: well hang on, is this the right way of doing things?”
