A call for more black and ethnic minority councillors in London was made at a conference in the capital yesterday. A study by Queen Mary University London found black people are under-represented in London’s town halls, with half as many as would be expected for the population. Almost four in 10 Londoners believe there should be more ethnic minorities in local government, a YouGov survey found. Some 44 per cent wanted more women, while 46 per cent felt there are too few disabled councillors.
Findings were revealed at a Who Represents London? conference at the Mile End Institute, whose director, Professor Tim Bale, said: “Londoners would like to see more diversity in those who represent them.”
