Former cabinet minister says UK centrist party has ‘lost touch’ with voters and must listen more. Sir Ed Davey has won the race to become the new leader of the Liberal Democrats. The acting leader will now take over on a permanent basis after beating his competitor, fellow MP Layla Moran. At an event in London, Sir Ed said it was time for the party to "wake up and smell the coffee" after only securing 12% of the vote in the last general election. Tim Bale, Professor of Politics at Queen Mary University of London, said: "[Ed Davey] does have a chance if he aims everything at socially liberal voters who are put off by Boris’s culture-war populism but can’t quite bring themselves to vote for a Labour party that, however much it changes, might still hit them hard in the pocket."
