Professor of Politics, Professor Philip Cowley has written a letter to the Editor of The Times in which he discusses Labour’s electoral plausibility. He writes: “Sir, After Labour lost three consecutive elections in the 1950s an influential book was published, Must Labour Lose? Yet it was the Conservatives who went on to lose four of the next five general elections. Similar prophets of doom appeared in 1992, after Labour had
lost four elections in a row. It is difficult right now to predict a Labour victory at the next election. But it was difficult in 1992 and in 1959, and one of the lessons of recent general elections is that voters are becoming increasingly volatile and willing to change parties.”
