In a poll by the market research firm YouGov this week, Mr Sunak has an approval rating of 60 per cent, with only 11 per cent disapproving. While the public is rallying behind the government now, people are likely to ask hard questions afterward, especially about the austerity policies enacted by Conservative governments, which left the National Health Service financially starved and ill-equipped for the deluge of virus patients.
