Phillip Cowley, Professor of Politics at Queen Mary has written an opinion piece in the Times about the recent Tory backbench rebellions. He wrote: "It is not just the size of the rebellion that should worry Boris Johnson. He won the vote, but the issue alienates significant elements in his own party. It does so over an issue which is not trivial or ephemeral, but one which is central to government activity, and likely to remain so for the foreseeable future."
