Too much localism gives us second-rate MPs

Over the past decade, the trend to choose MPs who are local has become very pronounced, as the academic Philip Cowley has shown. Indeed, at the last election, 43 per cent of new Tory MPs and 52 per cent on the Labour side were councilors.

Professor Cowley also had a Letter to the Editor published in The Times on the trend towards MPs increasingly having local roots.
