Law and Economics LLM

The LLM in Law and Economics is a programme offered by the Centre for Commercial Law Studies (CCLS). This specialist programme will train in Law and Economics, an interdisciplinary topic which draws from both arenas. The programme utilises different teaching technics to challenge students. It is designed for anyone with an academic background in Law or Economics.

  • Master a new discipline. If you are a lawyer, you will consider the legal implication of financial and economic dilemmas. If you are an economist, you will consider the economic impact of new laws and regulations.
  • Gain the theory, knowledge, and practical skills required to work in any legal, banking, financial, governmental or research institution.
  • High-profile guest lecturers have included the  General Counsel and Director of the Legal Department (IMF) and the Chief Legal Advisor (Bank of England) and the former Minister of Finance of Greece.
  • Taught by academics from Queen Mary's Centre for Commercial Law Studies

What you'll study

The programme involves two core interdisciplinary modules focusing on Law and Economics. These modules are complemented with modules in law, theoretical and applied economics to provide you with the necessary tools to analyse various legal frameworks that shape markets. You will select from taught modules from both law and economics, enabling you to focus on your interest and gear your qualification toward your desired career trajectory. You will select these modules during a comprehensive induction period where the teaching staff will provide you with an overview of their content.

If you want to review or gain a broad understanding of financial and legal concepts such as statistical distributions and matrix algebra, you have the option to attend pre-sessional modules and have access to basic statistics and statistical software.

You will also have voluntary access to an excellent series of lectures in Critical Thinking and Writing in Law to help you improve your writing and research in law skills.

We only allow one application from our range of LLM programmes so please ensure you apply for your main programme of interest. Please note you can request to change programme at offer stage via your MYSIS admissions portal and also request this after enrolment via the School of Law Taught Programme office.

Structure

You will need to complete 180 credits in total:

  • 60 credits of compulsory taught modules
  • 90 credits of elective taught modules to be chosen from law or economics; with
  • 30 credits by dissertation of 10,000 words

Students have the option to attend the following pre-sessional courses held during induction week:

  • Pre-sessional course in mathematics and statistics (optional)
  • Pre-sessional course in law (optional)

  • You will be assessed by a range of methods combining examinations and coursework which will be fully explained in your student pack available during induction.
  • For your dissertation, you will undertake more self-directed research and writing work with the support of an allocated supervisor.

Teaching

You will be taught with a mixture of formal lectures and small group seminars. The seminars are designed to generate informed discussion around set topics, and may involve student presentations and group exercises as well as open discussion.

You will have a team of advisers to support you, including the Research Directors and tutors, and your module convenors.

Campus

Teaching for Law modules is based at the Centre for Commercial Law Studies (CCLS), located in Lincoln's Inn Fields. This area is home to numerous barristers’ chambers and law firms and is a short walk from the Royal Courts of Justice. Our academics and students interact with leading legal professionals, many of whom regularly teach and take part in our seminars and conferences. 

Teaching for Economics modules will be based at the School of Economics and Finance on Queen Mary's Mile End campus. Being one of the largest self-contained residential campuses in London, the Mile End campus houses the University's library and is located on the doorstep of London’s legal district. Our academics and students interact with leading legal professionals, many of whom regularly teach and take part in our seminars and conferences. 

Depending on the modules you choose, you may also have classes at one of the QM central campus locations (Charterhouse Square or West Smithfield).

Degree requirements

A 2:1 or above at undergraduate level in Law or Economics (Finance).

Graduates with a 2:2 honours degree who also have other legal qualifications and/or substantial professional legal experience may also qualify.
