Do you want a bright, enthusiastic postgraduate law student to support you and your team?
In the Externships Programme, postgraduate law students are placed in innovative start-ups, offering legal and business support one day a week for six months, from October to April each year.
In the Externships programme, postgraduate law students volunteer alongside their studies to join a start-up team for one day per week, for six months (with a break to complete their exams and assessments). Externships can be in-person, remote or hybrid.
Students are eager to help and learn how to apply their knowledge, and you get the support you need to navigate the legal maze of running your business. Externs can help with a range of commercial issues, including supporting your team in understanding how to work with lawyers and develop a legal strategy for your business.
Externs are not supervised by external solicitors, they are not qualified solicitors, nor are they qualified to provide legal advice. Here are some examples of what an extern can help you with [PDF 86KB].
Participating in our programme is completely free. The qLegal team will select the extern for you based on your specific interests and skill requirements.
However, we encourage founders who can afford to pay students the London Minimum Wage to do so. In that case, we will give you the opportunity to interview three pre-selected students before making your final selection.
Externs receive regular support and training from qLegal throughout the programme to develop their professional skill set.
Our onboarding process will support you in defining the scope of their role within your start-up. This ensures a smooth and productive collaboration, allowing you to maximise the value they bring to your team.

We open applications from new hosts (start-ups and tech companies) each spring/summer for the next October intake of the Externship programme.
