Gavin Sutter, lecturer in Media Law at Queen Mary, comments on The Defamation Bill which is due to go before the committee approval in the House of Lords.
“Lester’s Bill, while not recommending totally removing juries from libel trials, certainly takes a step closer to that eventuality. Given the trend of recent years towards ever-increasing minimisation of the right to a jury trial, it seems somewhat inevitable that this will eventually happen.”
