Profile

Rachael Mitchell is Head of Academic Leadership Development. She leads the newly created leadership development team, supporting academic leadership development at Queen Mary. Rachael is building our leadership development programme, taking a strategic approach to the development and retention of talent in order to support the delivery of our ambitious Strategy 2030. 

 The academic leadership offering will reflect the complex roles and responsibilities inherent in academic careers, adopting an integrated approach which encompasses research, education and scholarship alongside citizenship & inclusion, enterprise & external engagement and professional practice.  It will be designed to align with the Academic Careers Framework and Our Values in action. 

Rachael has worked within learning and organisational development for more than 10 years. She moved into learning and development in the legal industry after completing her law degree and Bar Professional Training course. Since then, she has delivered leadership and management training in a range of industries and companies including the Financial Ombudsman Service, The University of Essex, Taylor Wessing and HCL Technologies.

As a keen learner Rachael has a Postgraduate Certificate in Psychology, a range of psychometric accreditations and is currently completing her BSc in Physics part-time. Being a leadership enthusiast, she recently led the Open University’s rocket team to win at the Mach 22 rocket launch competition, led by Discover Space UK, at Spaceport Machrihanish.

When Rachael is not at work, she is usually trying to solve the next Rubik’s cube, dancing at jive swing or doing a terrible job gardening.
