Metaverse project

The metaverse is an online imitation of reality where learners can interact with each other using virtual avatars. It can also be used as a social meeting space for students to connect with each other.

The CODE (Centre for Online & Distance Education) funded project “Evaluating an innovative approach to supporting teamwork online” has several goals:

  • evaluate the effectiveness of immersion in virtual meeting spaces in the metaverse to facilitate communication and teamwork online, and to enhance the students’ learning experience and sense of belonging
  • empower learners by involving them in the design of immersive virtual environments tailored to their unique needs and goals. The metaverse is a modulable shared space, that can be adjusted for students to build the learning space and experience that suits them best.

Learners from each institution at Queen Mary and on the transnational programs in Beijing, Xian, Nanchang and Hainan (China) will be participating.

FMD Immersive Lab

The FMD Immersive Learning Lab was established in 2024 as a central hub across the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry, to explore the potential of use of virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR), mixed reality (MR) and extended reality (XR) for teaching, learning and assessment.

We support the development of an integrated ecosystem of immersive learning technologies, strongly evidenced by proven digital pedagogy principles.
