2025 QMUL-Cornell Migration Spring School 4th- 9th May 2025, Gozo and Malta

CALL FOR EXPRESSIONS OF INTEREST

We are excited to invite expressions of interest from Postgraduate Masters and Doctoral students to participate in an interdisciplinary and cross institutional Migration Spring School co-delivered by Cornell University and Queen Mary and hosted by Queen Mary Gozo (Malta).

Framed by a focus on the experiences and politics of migration in the Mediterranean, this unique offering brings together colleagues from Geography, Cultural Studies, History, Law, Psychology, Public Health and Policy. It will engage students in interdisciplinary historical, legal, labour, health and rights frameworks, as well as in policies, ideologies, practices and experiences that relate to cross-border migration, both documented and undocumented. Topics covered will range from histories of migration to labour pathways and economic migration, questions of migrant crises, displacement and its effects on youth, health, and climate, environmental change and food systems.

With experts from multiple disciplinary backgrounds at hand, it is our intention to open spaces for transdisciplinary approaches to understanding international migration in its complexities. We will collaborate with Maltese academics and migration activists, and where possible, there will be the opportunity to learn from migrants and refugees on the island.

Combining lively discussions, talks, ethnographic walks, cultural explorations, in-class activities, selected students will have the opportunity to visit Gozo and Malta’s many sites of relevant interest.

HOW TO APPLY

Postgraduate Masters and Doctoral students are invited to submit expressions of interest detailing their academic and disciplinary background and their planned or envisioned future endeavours in migration studies, explaining what they hope to gain from the Spring School. Selected students will be expected to demonstrate ongoing academic interest in and knowledge of international migration through their current or recent programme of study.

A 250-word statement should be submitted to Prof Parvati Nair (p.nair@qmul.ac.uk) by 5pm on Monday 24th March 2025. The subject heading for your email must be ‘Malta Spring School.’ Successful candidates will be informed by Wednesday 26th March 2025. Please, note six places are available for Queen Mary students.

The travel and accommodation costs of selected students will be covered by the organisers. Students will need to defray their own maintenance and other expenses outside any group meals specifically indicated in the programme. Students are also responsible for arranging their own visas, if required.
