Dr Eizaguirre was involved in a study of loggerhead turtle hatchlings around Cape Verde. The study used new nano-sized acoustic transmitters to get the first direct evidence of the hatchlings getting caught in currents in the hours after they first enter the sea. Previous difficulties with tagging such small animals means that there is little understanding of the first few years of turtles’ lives.
