Restaurant high chairs harbour more bacteria than the average toilet seat

Published:

SBCS microbiologist Dr Ron Cutler was interviewed by the Mail Online this week following the finding by a US team that toddlers’ high chairs in restaurants can harbour more bacteria than some toilet seats. The scientists swabbed high chairs in 30 restaurants and found bacteria including E. coli, which is known to cause stomach upsets in young children. Dr Cutler said: “While you would not expect a high chair to be as clean as a hospital it should certainly be preferable that they were cleaner than this report indicates. Children could potentially be getting ill as a result of contact with high chairs if this report is accurate.”
