We caught up with Mithsuka a third year Biochemistry Student who shared with us why he chose to embark on his BSc Biochemistry degree at Queen Mary, the highlights of his course so far and his role as a Clinical Skills Lab Technician and an Events Officer for the Sri Lankan Society.
Why did you choose to study your course at Queen Mary?
I chose to study Biochemistry at Queen Mary University because of its reputation for excellence in the sciences, particularly in the field of biological and behavioural sciences. The university's cutting-edge research facilities and the opportunity to work alongside renowned academics in the field were major draws for me. Additionally, as an international student from Sri Lanka, I was attracted to the diverse and inclusive environment at QMUL, which would enhance my educational experience.
What has been the highlight of your course (so far)?
The highlights of my Biochemistry course at QMUL have been multifaceted. The hands-on lab experience has been invaluable, allowing me to apply and deepen my understanding of complex concepts in a practical setting. Additionally, engaging in collaborative group work, creating a podcast in my second year, and forming lifelong friendships have been enriching experiences. The opportunity to connect with highly reputable academics has provided me with mentorship and expanded my professional network. Specific modules like 'Membrane and Cellular Biochemistry' and 'Metabolic Pathways' have been particularly enlightening, offering me a comprehensive understanding of vital biochemical processes. These modules, combined with my lab work, have not only solidified my theoretical knowledge but also enhanced my practical skills, crucial for my future career aspirations.
How have you found the support services and the campus and facilities?
The support services at QMUL have been exceptional. The student support services have provided invaluable assistance throughout my academic journey, especially as an international student adjusting to a new environment. The campus facilities, including the well-equipped library and state-of-the-art laboratories, have greatly enhanced my learning experience. Additionally, the vibrant student societies and social activities have made my time at QMUL both enriching and enjoyable.
Tell me a little about any internships or work experience you have taken part in
My role as a Clinical Skills Lab Technician at QMUL has been a significant part of my work experience, where I developed essential skills in inventory management, hazardous waste disposal, and lab setup. These skills are fundamental in any scientific setting and have broad applications.
Additionally, my involvement in a research project focusing on plastic degradation has deepened my understanding of environmental challenges and potential solutions, which is crucial in today's context. The combination of practical lab experience and research has not only enhanced my scientific acumen but also opened doors to exciting future opportunities. These experiences have laid a strong foundation for me to potentially pursue further studies, such as undertaking a PhD, or to explore a career in areas like pharmaceuticals, where my skills and knowledge can be applied to make meaningful contributions to the field.
Any final thoughts?
One of my fondest memories at QMUL has been organizing and participating in events as the Events Officer for the Sri Lankan Society. These experiences not only helped in building a close-knit community but also in developing my organizational and leadership skills. My time at QMUL has been a journey of growth, learning, and unforgettable experiences.

My top tip for new students would be to actively engage in both academic and extracurricular activities. University life is not just about academics; it's also about personal growth and developing a diverse skill set. Get involved in societies, take up roles that challenge you, and make the most of the opportunities that come your way.
