The School of Biological and Behavioural Sciences at Queen Mary University of London is one of the UK’s elite research centres, according to the 2021 Research Excellence Framework (REF), the UK-wide assessment of university research.
We are home to an active and multi-disciplinary research programme. Our research pages provide an overview of our research activity.
We recruit PhD students every year for projects spanning the biological sciences and experimental psychology. Our postgraduate research training will give you an extensive grounding in research design, methods, implementation and analysis.
We offer a friendly, interactive and lively environment for students undertaking our postgraduate research degrees. As a student with us, you will also be able to take advantage of London’s position as a major international centre for scientific meetings and conferences. Our research resources include excellent library and information services, and a high-speed computer network that provides access to a wide range of databases and other electronic sources of information. Students also have access to a number of research facilities both within our School and across other departments within Queen Mary.
Our PhD students are supervised by academic staff who are leaders in their field, and also benefit from the additional insight and expertise offered by our strong collaborative links, which include partnerships with other academic departments at Queen Mary, as well as with external universities, research institutes and industry, including the Environment Agency, Kew, the Natural History Museum, the Institute of Zoology, GlaxoSmithKline, Procter & Gamble, AstraZeneca and EU Nanodrug.
