Place cells and grid cells in the hippocampus and its adjacent cortical areas have demonstrated their firing activities correlated with animals’ current locations and orientations, which is associated with spatial memory. While the anatomical connections between the hippocampus and its adjacent areas are well studied, it is not clear how the spatial cells form their firing patterns upon animals entering a new environment. In this project, the formation of spatial patterns of place and grid cells in virtual environments will be investigated using in vivo electrophysiological recording techniques.
