One of the top universities in the country, Nanchang University is ranked about 60 out of roughly 2,000 universities in China. Nanchang University (NCU) is one of China’s key universities under the 211 Project, a Chinese government initiative aimed at strengthening higher education institutions. Nanchang University also incorporates the country’s largest medical college, originally founded in 1921.
Situated in south-eastern China, near the famous Yangtze River, Nanchang is the capital of Jiangxi Province and has a population of around 5 million. The university has over 70,000 undergraduate students and 12,000 postgraduates on five campuses. The joint programme with Queen Mary is taught at the university's main campus, Qian-Hu, an attractively landscaped 300-hectare campus built in 2005.
Typically, lectures start at 8am each weekday. Lecture recording is standard practice, and you can expect high-standard AV equipment in most lecture halls. Life on campus is buzzing – students and staff will experience varied and vibrant food cultures and a great nightlife. Nanchang itself is off the beaten tourist track, but is still a sizeable city with a rich history and culture, and offers an opportunity to have unfettered access to authentic Chinese faculty life.
