Speaker: Davina Cooper
Davina Cooper, Research Professor in Law at Kings College London will present Should we continue to have a legal sex/ gender? on Wednesday 19 February, 1pm-2pm.
Abstract: This talk will explore a speculative law reform question that is starting to generate international attention. Are there good reasons to retain sex/ gender as a formal part of people's legal status and identity? What would be the implications of removing it, particularly from a social justice and feminist perspective? Exploring responses to these questions brings the relationship of law to equality, and the conceptual future of gender into view. It also foregrounds questions about what academic research does when it pays detailed attention to policy reforms not yet on the political table.
