This year, the School of Business and Management has launched a new mentoring scheme for 1st year students. PASS (Peer Assisted Student Support) allows 1st year students to be mentored by 2nd and 3rd year students.
Thanks to this scheme, first year students can simply drop by during weekly sessions and discuss with student mentors issues related to their academic work and university life. During the mentoring sessions held this year, first year students had an opportunity to ask questions and tips about essay writing, exam preparation, group presentations, study skills and module choices. Those who attended the sessions found the discussions with student mentors extremely useful.
The scheme is led by Dr Elena Doldor, PASS Academic Coordinator within the School of Business and Management. This year we had a group of 17 student volunteers who acted as mentors. Their enthusiasm and commitment were celebrated during the recent annual PASS ceremony organized by the College, where students were awarded Mentoring Certificates.
Nicolay Beck received the Mentor of the Year Award. Warm congratulations go to this year’s entire team of mentors: Ayse Yalinca, Aurora Eskedal, Antonia Hobden, Basma Tahir (Student Organizer), Charlotte Pearson, Francesco Lanzoni, Gennifer Morris, Helene Teslo, Josefine Carling, Lisha Joseph, Meet Kakkar, Nicolay Beck, Quentin van Grenechen, Rezwana Akther (Senior Mentor), Saalika Madar, Timothy Davis, and Trym Stalsberg.
We are currently recruiting mentors for the next academic year (2014-2015). If you are about to complete your 1st or 2nd UG year and you are interested in becoming a mentor next year, please email Dr Elena Doldor (e.r.doldor@qmul.ac.uk) by April 20th, 2014.
In order to be a mentor, you need to:• Be willing to support younger students in their first year of university by sharing your academic experience and offering friendly advice• Commit to attending the PASS sessions every week• Be involved in publicizing the scheme and reaching out to the next 1st year cohort• Undertake a short PASS mentoring training course offered by the College (this will be organized for the whole team in Sept/Oct)
Mentoring will help you enhance your CV and develop valuable skills related to teamwork, organization, and communication.
