"Unconventional, effervescent, truly intellectual. One of a kind."

It is with great sadness that we inform you of the passing of our much loved colleague Santonu Basu last Thursday, 17 March after a heart attack.

Santonu joined Queen Mary in 2005. He primarily worked in the area of credit rationing and made a key contribution providing a new explanation as to why banks ration credit, along with investigating problems associated with financial liberalization. He was a development economist, a heterodox thinker and a post-Keynesian.

He published widely in scholarly journals including Cambridge Journal of Economics, World Development, Journal of Post Keynesian Economics and so on.

Prior to coming to the UK in 2001, he had worked in a number of universities in Australia over 25 years. Santonu was a kind and helpful person with a great sense of humour.

He took voluntary retirement from QMUL in 2012.

His funeral will be on Thursday 31st March at 4pm in Golders Green Crematorium; 62 Hoop Lane, Golders Green, NW11 7NL.
