ESRC 1+3 and +3 PhD Studentships

The School of Business and Management, Queen Mary University of London invites applications to be put forward for ESRC 1+3 (Masters + PhD), +3 (PhD) Studentships commencing October 2018, through the London Interdisciplinary Social Science (LISS) partnership.

Queen Mary University of London is a partner institution in one of the largest Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) Doctoral Training Partnerships in the country. The London Interdisciplinary Social Science (LISS) partnership, with King’s College London and Imperial College, will provide over 50 funded ESRC studentships a year across a range of interdisciplinary areas. Students will have access to a range of training and development opportunities across the three institutions.

 

The School of Business and Management welcomes applications in the following subject areas: Accounting, Finance, Marketing, Employment Relations, Equality and Diversity, Human Resource Management, Management & Organization Studies, Public Management, Supply Chain Management, Strategic Management, Information Management, Monetary and Macroeconomics, Labour Economics, Public Economics, International Business and Leadership.   

 

The School’s research strategy since its inception has been to sustain and enhance a distinctive research profile and ensure a supportive and intellectually challenging business and management research culture emphasising the interconnected nature of:

 

1) The economic, societal and historical contexts,
2) Social justice issues in business and management, and
3) Networks and governance in the private, public and third sectors.

The research proposals submitted by applicants should  normally fit at least one of the School’s centres/groups. There are currently nine research centres and groups associated with the School of Business and Management:

 

 

Candidates must specify which research group they wish to join and identify potential supervisor(s) on their application form. Candidates are encouraged to discuss their research proposal with a member of academic staff specialising in their research area.

 

The Award


Eligibility for the ESRC awards is based on UK residency, although EU students not resident in the UK may apply for a fees only award. For further details, please see: https://www.liss-dtp.ac.uk/

The Studentships consist of the full cost of (home or overseas) fees and maintenance for 3 years for +3 studentships and 4 years for 1+3 studentships. The School also provides all PhD researchers with a £1,000 research allowance for conference attendance and other research related expenses. Award holders will be expected to be resident in London during the period of the studentship.

 

Candidate Profile

To apply you will normally have a first degree with first class honors (or equivalent) and a Master's degree at distinction level, in business/management or a discipline related to your research topic. Borderline cases will be considered individually.  We do not normally accept an MBA. Relevant experience is also taken into account. Applicants are required to have an IELTS overall score of 7, a minimum score of 6.5 in writing at the time of application.  

 

Our PhD Programme is highly competitive and for research studentships all applicants will be judged according to the same criteria, namely: record of academic and/or professional achievement; quality of their research proposal; and compatibility with the research interests and expertise in the school.

To apply for a 1+3 or +3 studentship with LISS DTP, you must simultaneously complete (i) the online apllication to join an MRes or the PhD programme in the School of Business and Management at Queen Mary University of London, and (ii) studentship application to LISS DTP by the closing date. Please note that your prospective supervisor(s) must also submit their reference form by email to liss-dtp@kcl.ac.uk by 31 January 2018, 17:00 GMT. 

 

We advise that you aim to submit your admissions application to the School of Business and Management two weeks in advance of the 31 January deadline for your references to be received in a timely fashion.
