Dr Ishani Chandrasekara, Programme Director for BSc Accountancy (Flying Start), was issued the award by PQ Magazine, an award-winning publication for part-qualified accountants, with a readership of 25,000.
Dr Chandrasekara accepted the award at PQ Magazine’s 19th annual awards ceremony, which was attended by representatives from accountancy bodies ACCA, CIMA and ICAEW, ‘big-four’ accounting firms such as PwC, and the City of London Corporation.
Dr Chandrasekara said: “It is an incredible achievement to be shortlisted to the final five nominees, and to win Public Sector Lecturer of the Year 2022. I feel honoured and proud to see our work transform people’s lives and our local and international communities, in expected and unexpected ways. I'd like to take this opportunity thank PQ Magazine for recognising Queen Mary’s hard work and excellence in accounting education.”
Dr Chandrasekara has played a leading role in the development of Queen Mary’s BSc Accountancy (Flying Start) programme, run in partnership with PwC.
During her career, she has focused her efforts on widening access to the accounting industry, securing industry-sponsored scholarships and bursaries for students from low income-backgrounds.
These achievements were commended by the Queen Mary President and Principal, who issued Dr Chandrasekara with one of seven Education Excellence Awards in December 2021.
